Every archer has said some version of the same sentence: “I don’t know what happened — I never shoot like that at the club.” It’s tempting to treat that as an excuse. It isn’t. It’s a documented, studied psychological phenomenon, and understanding it properly is the first real step toward fixing it.

Choking is a real, named phenomenon — not a lack of talent

Sport psychologist Roy Baumeister was the first researcher to reliably reproduce “choking under pressure” in a laboratory setting, showing that performance genuinely deteriorates under conditions designed to simulate competitive stress rather than simply appearing to. Since then, choking has been formally defined as a drop in performance under pressure that falls below what the athlete has already demonstrated they’re capable of — in other words, it’s not that the skill was never there. It’s that pressure disrupted access to it.

That distinction matters enormously for archers. A bad tournament isn’t proof you’re not good enough. It’s usually proof that your mental preparation hasn’t caught up with your technical preparation yet.

Two competing theories of why it happens

Researchers broadly explain choking through two mechanisms, and most archers will recognise both from their own experience.

Self-focus theory suggests that under pressure, athletes start consciously monitoring movements that are normally automatic — essentially “checking their own work” mid-shot. For an archer, that might mean suddenly becoming hyper-aware of grip pressure or draw-hand position in a way that never happens on the practice line, and that conscious interference breaks the fluid, trained motion.

Distraction theory suggests the opposite problem: pressure fills working memory with worry — about the score, the opponent, the outcome — leaving less mental capacity for the task itself. Either way, the result is the same: attention moves away from the process and onto something the archer can’t directly control in the moment.

A neuroscience study out of Stony Brook University supports part of this picture directly. Researchers found that athletes who scored high on measures of sport-related anxiety showed a significantly stronger brain response to their own errors specifically when they knew they were being evaluated, compared to when there was no evaluation at all. In plain terms: for anxious performers, mistakes become more mentally loud exactly when it matters most — which is precisely when you want to be moving on to the next shot, not dwelling on the last one.

What actually reduces choking, according to the research

This is the part that should be genuinely encouraging: choking isn’t a fixed trait. A wide body of sport psychology research points to specific, learnable interventions.

Simulate the pressure before it’s real. Psychologist Sian Beilock’s research is widely cited on this point — exposing athletes to high-pressure conditions in training measurably helps them perform when those conditions show up for real. The nervousness itself isn’t the enemy; the unfamiliarity of it is. Archers who never practice under any kind of consequence are, in effect, meeting real pressure for the first time on the day it matters most.

Get the worry out of your head before you compete. Beilock’s work has also shown that “expressive writing” — spending a few minutes writing out pre-competition worries beforehand — measurably reduces the cognitive load those worries create, likely because a written-down thought no longer needs to be actively held in mind to avoid being lost.

Train attribution, not just technique. More recent research on “attribution training” shows that how athletes explain a poor performance to themselves — whether they treat a bad end as evidence of who they are, or as a specific, fixable moment — has a measurable effect on their ability to manage anxiety and self-doubt when they return to competition. Archers who are taught to reframe mistakes as isolated and correctable, rather than as proof of a deeper flaw, show better resilience across a tournament.

What the coaches say about Choking in Archery

Sport-science research explains why choking happens; the archery world’s own coaches largely converge on the same conclusion from decades of hands-on experience.

KiSik Lee — the coach behind Olympic medals with Australia and more than 300 World Cup medals during his tenure as USA Archery’s head coach — frames it plainly on his own coaching resources: excelling in competition begins with excelling in training, and once the physical and technical foundation is truly in place, it’s mental toughness that determines whether an athlete can perform on the world stage. That single idea underpins almost everything modern archery coaching says about competition readiness — technique gets you to the line; the mind gets you through it.

You’ll find the same theme repeated informally across the sport, in every gym-wall quote about archery being “as much mental as physical.” It’s a cliché precisely because coaches keep rediscovering it’s true. The research above is simply the evidence for what experienced coaches have been telling archers for decades by feel.

Bringing research and range time together

None of this is abstract. Every principle above translates directly into something an archer can do this week:

Score practice ends instead of shooting loosely, so consequence becomes familiar.

Add real or symbolic stakes to training sessions.

Write down competition worries before you shoot, rather than carrying them silently to the line.

Build a fixed pre-shot routine that keeps attention on process, not outcome.

Treat a bad arrow as a single data point to correct, not a verdict on your ability.

The gap between practice scores and competition scores isn’t a mystery, and it isn’t a character flaw. It’s a well-studied, well-understood psychological pattern — and like any pattern, it responds to deliberate training.

This is the exact territory Archery Mental Mastery is built for — translating sport psychology research into practical mental training archers can actually use on the practice line and carry straight into competition.

Sources referenced: Baumeister’s foundational choking research; self-focus and distraction models of choking under pressure (as reviewed in Educational Psychology Review and International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology); the error-related negativity study on sport anxiety and evaluation (Hajcak et al., published in the Journal of Psychophysiology literature); Sian Beilock’s research on pressure exposure and expressive writing; recent attribution-training research on choking recovery (Frontiers in Psychology, 2025); and KiSik Lee’s published coaching resources (kisiklee.com).

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6707866

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5452956

The Science of Choking in Archery.
