Breathe, reset, let it go, don’t force the next one — it’s become common wisdom in the sport, and for good reason, because it works.

But almost nobody talks about the opposite moment. The one right after a perfect shot. A dead-center ten, an end that couldn’t have gone better, a string of shots that finally feels like everything clicked. And then — inexplicably — the very next arrow falls apart, choking after a good shot archery.

If that’s happened to you, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. It has a name, a real psychological mechanism behind it, and — more usefully — a way to train around it.

The Shift Nobody Warns You About

Here’s what actually happens in that moment, even if it doesn’t feel like anything is happening at all: your mental state quietly shifts from trust the process to don’t mess this up now.

It sounds like a small shift. It isn’t. “Trust the process” keeps your attention on execution — the same physical sequence you’ve rehearsed thousands of times. “Don’t mess this up” pulls your attention onto the outcome instead, and the moment outcome enters the picture, so does self-monitoring. You start watching yourself perform the shot instead of simply performing it.

This is where a genuinely useful piece of sports psychology comes in. Researchers studying this exact pattern have found that this drop in performance occurs when people consciously monitor skill-based processes that are best executed as automated actions, and that overthinking or monitoring each step is likely to end in choking.</cite> It’s known in the research world as the conscious processing hypothesis, and it applies just as much to a recurve release as it does to a basketball free throw or a golf swing on the final hole.

In other words: a skill you’ve drilled into your body doesn’t need your conscious mind supervising it. The moment it starts supervising — usually triggered by “this one matters, don’t ruin it” — is often the moment execution breaks down and you find yourself choking after a good shot archery

Why Success Triggers This More Than Failure Does

It seems backwards at first. Shouldn’t a great shot build confidence, not undermine it?

It does build confidence — and that’s exactly the problem. A great end raises the stakes of the next one, purely in your own head. Before the perfect ten, the pressure was diffuse: shoot well. After it, the pressure narrows and sharpens: don’t be the one who ruins this now that it’s actually good. Cognitive scientist Sian Beilock, whose research this field leans on heavily, describes choking simply as <cite index=”24-1″>performing worse than expected because of the situation and its consequences</cite> — and a perfect end changes the consequences attached to the next shot, even though nothing about the shot itself has changed at all.

This is the same mechanism behind a golfer three-putting the final hole of a tournament they were leading comfortably, or a basketball player missing a routine free throw after a string of makes with the game on the line. The skill was never in question. What changed was what the next attempt suddenly meant.

What This Looks Like at Full Draw

For archers specifically, it tends to show up as a very particular kind of tension — not the shaky, anxious tension of a bad shot, but a stiffer, more deliberate kind. You find yourself aiming a little longer than usual. Double-checking your anchor point instead of trusting it. Consciously walking through steps that, five minutes earlier, you executed without a single thought.

That’s the conscious processing hypothesis in action, arrow by arrow. The routine that got you the perfect ten was automatic. The routine right after it often isn’t — because some part of your mind has started supervising a process it was never meant to supervise mid-shot.

The Fix Isn’t Different From the Bad-Shot Fix — And That’s the Whole Point

Here’s the part worth sitting with: the archers who handle this well aren’t using a different mental process for good ends than they use for bad ones. They’re using the same one.

If your process after a bad shot is “reset, breathe, return to the routine, don’t add a story to it” — the process after a great shot needs to be identical. Not “capitalize on this,” not “keep the momentum going,” not “don’t blow it now.” Just: reset, breathe, return to the routine. The shot that just happened, good or bad, is already over. The only job left is the next one, executed the same way it always is.

This is a genuinely underused idea in archery coaching, and it’s backed by a broader finding in the choking-under-pressure literature: consistent pre-performance routines are one of the most reliable tools for preventing choking precisely because they don’t ask an athlete to feel a certain way before the next attempt — they ask for the same physical sequence regardless of how the athlete feels. The routine doesn’t care whether the last arrow was a five or a ten. That’s what makes it trustworthy.

A Simple Mental Cue for the Moment After a Great Shot

If you want something concrete to carry to the range:

Notice the shift, and name it on purpose. The instant you catch yourself thinking don’t mess this up now — or feel yourself aiming a beat longer than normal, or double-checking something your body already knows — that’s the signal. Not a warning that something’s wrong with you. Just information: outcome has entered the shot. Bring it back to process.

Then do exactly what you’d do after a bad shot: lower the bow if you need to, take one full breath, and restart your routine from the very beginning. Not because the great shot needs “fixing” — it doesn’t — but because the next shot deserves the same untouched, automatic process every other shot gets, whether the one before it was your best of the day or your worst.

The Real Takeaway

Archery doesn’t actually have two separate mental games — one for recovering from mistakes and another for handling success. It has one mental game: staying with the process, regardless of what the last arrow did. Bad shots pull you toward frustration. Good shots pull you toward pressure. Both pulls lead to the same place if you let them — a mind that’s left the present shot and started managing the story around it.

The archers who stay consistent aren’t the ones who never feel that pull. They’re the ones who’ve built a process solid enough that it doesn’t matter which direction the pull is coming from.

This exact skill — training your mind to treat every shot the same, whether it follows your best end or your worst — is one of the core systems we build out inside here at Archery Mental Mastery

Suggested reading

My full breakdown of resetting after a bad shot → “reset from a bad shot” Blog

“Find our more about my Archery Mental Mastery Full Programme” → HERE

Psychology Today — Why Do Top Athletes Choke Under Pressure: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/sports-and-psychology/202202/why-do-top-athletes-choke-under-pressure

NPR — cognitive scientist Sian Beilock on why we choke under pressure: https://www.npr.org/2024/07/19/g-s1-11434/why-we-choke-under-pressure-according-to-a-cognitive-scientist

Peer-reviewed review on choking interventions in sport: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1750984X.2017.1408134

Every archer gets coached on how to recover from a bad shot.
